My TOP 10 TIPS on Transitionsing from Relaxed to Natural Hair

Do you suffer from curly hair that’s dry, damaged, frizzy, or uncontrollable? Are you open to trying something new? The curly girl method (also referred to as “no-poo”) is based on the book “Curly Girl” by Lorraine Massey. The nickname “no-poo” alludes to not using a sulfate shampoo, because sulfates’ tend to strip the hair of its natural oils. Once you take away the sulfates, your hair can retain its natural moisture.

Like many beauty regimens, the results will vary from person to person, but this method just might work for you. So, say good-bye to the frizz and split ends and hello to soft, healthy curls!

How to Care for Your Curly Hair

  1. Throw away all brushes, combs, etc.  You may use a wide-toothed comb, or even better, just use your fingers (when the hair is wet).  If it is difficult to untangle your hair this way, add more conditioner to your hair when wet or trim any unruly ends.  Have your hair trimmed. This will get rid of any damage or split ends.
  2. Clarify with a sulfate shampoo (for the last time) before beginning. This will cleanse your hair of any silicones – ingredients in some hair products that are not water soluble. Throw away EVERY BOTTLE of shampoo that contains ANY kind of sulfate. They don’t wash out easily and dry out your curls, creating frizz.  Common detergents found in shampoos make curly hair frizzy and uncooperative.  Stop shampooing your hair.  Conditioner can be used sufficiently to clean the hair.
  3. Throw away (or give to someone who has straight hair/donate) all straighteners, blow-fryers (dryers), and accessories for them.  I guarantee that you look prettier natural, and you can always air/towel dry!
  4. No more silicone in conditioners!  It actually repels moisture.  Also, it isn’t biodegradable, so you’ll be doing the environment a favor.
  5. Do the final rinse of your hair with cool or cold water. This will decrease frizz and add shine. Leave some conditioner in your hair, especially in dry sections like the ends. (Using your normal conditioner as a leave-in is fine too.)  It’s fine to run your fingers through your hair gently, but do not comb your hair after this point.
  6. Gently scrunch your hair with a t-shirt, paper towels, or a micro-fiber towel to remove excess moisture. A generic terrycloth towel will make your hair frizzy. You may wish to finger shape your curls at this time instead. Next, wait five or so minutes so the hair can permanently assume its current shape.
  7. Apply products to your hair (as long as they are silicone free).  Do this while your hair is soaking wet if you have curlier hair, but wait five minutes or so if you have medium to wavy curly hair.
  8. Steer clear of any gels that contain alcohol, silicone, parabens, phthalates.  Alcohol drys it out and makes it make noise. silicone, the same reason as conditioner.  Experts question whether parabens are safe, and phthalates also have health concerns.
  9. Do not touch your hair while it is drying or it will mess up and frizz.

 TIPS

  • You can still use shampoo, just make sure it is sulfate-free.
  • Look for products with natural ingredients.
  • Many curlies go outside of the guidelines (for example, using light silicones, straightening hair with a flat iron, clarifying with a sulfate free shampoo, etc.), because it works for them.
      • Different products work better for different types of curly hair. You will want to experiment and check out hair  products that work for your hair type.

The Perfect Winter Wash and Go Method for “Natural Hair”

Stop shampooing your hair.

sham + poo = phony + poop

Most shampoos contain harsh, drying sulfates that are extremely damaging for curly hair (ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc.). These common detergents found in shampoos make curly hair frizzy and uncooperative.  Conditioner can be used sufficiently to clean the hair.  Also, more gentle shampoos that contain mild cleansers (i.e. cocamidopropyl betaine or coco betaine) can be used occasionally or more often for wavier hair types.

  • “You’d never dream of washing a good sweater with detergent. Yet most shampoos contain harsh detergents (sodium lauryl sulfate or laureth sulfate) that one finds in dish washing liquid.  They’re great for pots and pans because they cut grease so effectively. Your hair on the other hand, needs to retain some natural oils, which protect your hair and scalp. Stripping them away deprives the hair of necessary moisture and amino acids and makes it look dry and dull.”– Lorraine Massey

How to Wash Your Hair Without Shampoo

Using conditioner, or another replacement such as baking soda in place of shampoo will cleanse the hair just as effectively without stripping it of moisture.

Wash your hair with a shampoo replacement.

  • For curly or wavy hair that isn’t oily: Distribute conditioner on your entire scalp and massage your scalp with the tips of your fingers. This will cleanse the scalp of any dirt and get rid of dandruff. Then rinse thoroughly. You only need to do this step every other day.
  • For straight hair or hair that’s oily:  Consider using home remedies in place of harsh shampoos. All of these still may be a little drying to the hair so be sure to condition afterwards.
    • Baking Soda Mix: Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate. It is sold in most supermarkets, health food stores and similar places. Before showering, combine one tablespoon baking soda with one cup warm or hot water in a plastic bottle and shake thoroughly. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly.
    • ‘Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse: This of course, smells like vinegar. Don’t worry though; once you have rinsed your hair the smell will go away. If it doesn’t, you are using too much vinegar. Combine one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with one cup water in plastic bottle. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly.
    • Lemon Juice: Combine the juice of one lemon with an equal amount of your normal conditioner. Work into the hair and comb through. Rinse thoroughly.
    • Distribute a moisturizing conditioner throughout all of your hair.

    • Let the conditioner sit in your hair for five minutes or so for extra moisture.
  • Do the final rinse of your hair with cool or cold water to decrease frizz and add shine. The outermost layer of a hair strand is comprised of downward-facing cuticle scales (away from the scalp).
  • Leave some conditioner in your hair, especially in dry sections like the ends.
  • Avoid waxes and silicones, ingredients that generally end in -cone, -conol or -xane, in hair products. Short term, silicones will make hair look sleeker and less frizzy, but in the long run they will coat the hair shaft and seal out moisture causing hair to become straw like, less defined, and frizzy. The only way to remove silicones and waxes is to use a harsh, drying sulfate shampoo. Most of the highly commercialized lines of hair products (Pantene, Garnier Fructis, Aussie, Tressame, Sunsilk) contain silicones. However if a silicone has “PEG” in front of it, it is water-soluble and will not build up.
